Knots, Tent and Basha Training
I. OVERALL CONCEPT
This training will be used to teach the new J1s how to tie round turn and two half hitch, pitch and strike a tent and a basha.

During each shift, Justin and Campcraft Comm will teach the first group of J1s in theory and in practical how to pitch a tent; while Yijing and Structure Comm will teach the second group of J1s how to pitch a basha. When it is time to rotate shifts, the 2 groups will just switch to the component they have not done yet.
- I/Cs will give an introduction to tent pitching
- Go through on how to maintain a tent, emphasizing on this point strongly
- A 6 men tent will be pitched in the middle of classroom simultaneously J2s present, acting as visual aid to the J1s.
Details:
- J1s to split into their groups of 4 and pitch a tent themselves without help from the seniors
- Campcraft Comm and J2s to supervise the J1s.
- Emphasize the importance of being accountable for one’s logistics.
Points to be taught | Details |
1.Introduction of tent pitching and camp craft | -Briefly explain about tent pitching and the importance of camp craft. -Camp craft is basically the skills and practice relating to camping. |
2. Safety (Should be emphasized on the most) | -It is of paramount importance as the safety of others will be jeopardized if rules and regulations are not adhered to. -How to analyze the campsite before pitching a tent (1.Must have the availability of water and dried twigs for fire. 2. Look out for wild animals roaming. 3.Look out for fallen branches which might be hazardous during thunderstorms) -What to look out for before pitching tents. (1.Do not pitch tent under the tree if it is infested with insects. 2. Ground should be flat and if possible, free of big rocks so that sleeping will be comfortable for them.) -DO NOT stay in the tent if there is a thunderstorm. |
3.Parts of a tent | -fly sheet, magic wands (emphasize that it is very fragile and that it should be handled with care at all times.), door of the tent, eg. |
4. How to handle the logistics | -Extra tent pegs should be placed in the bag. -Tent bags should be placed at the side of the door inside the tent. -Do emphasize that they should be responsible for their own logistics. |
5. Briefly introduce the knots that will be used during tent pitching. | -Reef knot (when it is used) -Round turn two half fitch (used to tie the commscord to the tent pegs.) |
6. How to pitch tent | -Open up tent bags to take out the fly sheet, magic wands, tent pegs and the tent. -Open up the tent and shake off the sand and dirt which may be on the tent. -Station 4 people at four sides of the tent. -Two volunteer will Insert the magic wands into the hole while the person from the opposite end respectively will receive the magic wands. -Raise the tent together to prevent the breakage of the magic wands. -Connect the 8 points of the tent to the tent pegs using the commscord by tying round turn two half fitch. -Peg the tent pegs down 45 degrees towards the tent. (this is to prevent the tent pegs from coming out easily) (DO NOT step on the tent pegs as it will cause it to bend, remove rocks if it prevents the tent pegs from being driven into the ground.) |
7. How to take care of the tent | -Tent doors should be facing the direction of the wind so that it will not be blown away.) - Do not fully zip the tents when not inside to allow the ventilation in the tent. - When it rains, remember to zip tents and close the flap on the window. -Maintain cleanliness of the tent at all times. (No shoes in the tents at all times.) -Place bags at all four sides of the tent to weigh down the tent when not inside. |
8. Striking of tents | - Take out the tent pegs first and clean them thoroughly before placing it back into the bag. -Untie the knot at the top of the tent. -Four people should be stationed at all sides of the tent and take down the tent at the same time to prevent the breakage of the magic wands. -One end will receive the magic wands while the other end will push the magic wands towards the receiver. |
9.How to keep the tent | -Fold the flysheet first. -Shake off the dirt and sand that is in the tent. -Fold the tent into a square and roll it up with the fly sheet and magic wands. -Check that there are 10 tent pegs in each tent bag. |

- Structure Comm and J2s to supervise the J1s.
- Emphasize the importance of being quick
